  • Hormonal imbalances
  • The use of certain hair serums can also make your scalp very oily
  • Untreated dandruff
  • Not washing your hair regularly enough

Home Remedies to Treat Oily and Greasy Hair

  • Tea Tree Oil
    This remedy is helpful for those who have a greasy scalp because of dandruff. A research study indicates that the application of the antimicrobial tea tree oil to your scalp can control the greasiness and itchiness caused by dandruff
    You will Need
    15 drops of tea tree oil
    30mL of any carrier oil(coconut or jojoba oil)

What You Have to Do


  • First, add 15 drops of tea tree oil to 30mL of any carrier oil and mix properly
  • Now apply this mixture to your scalp and spread it everywhere through the length of your hair
  • Now leave it on for about an hours before washing it off
  • You can go ahead and apply tea tree oil directly to your scalp if you are not reacting to it

How Often You Should Do This:
2 to 3 times a week

  •      Apple Cider Vinegar
    The presence of acetic acid in apple cider vinegar imparts pH-balancing properties to it. Its acidity can balance the pH level of your scalp, Since we already know that oily hair has a low pH, rinsing it with ACV might restore its pH balance and control the secretion of too much oil on your scalp.

You Will Need
2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
1 cup of water

What You Have To Do

  • First, add two to three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and mix properly
  • Now wash your hair with a light cleanser
  • Then after washing the cleanser off, rinse your hair with the apple cider vinegar solution
  • You will have to leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off with cold water

How Often You Should Do This

3 to 4 times a week

  • Coconut Oil
    Adding coconut oil prior to shampooing is a great way to condition your hair without making it greasy. Virgin coconut oil is light and has a lower molecular weight compared to many other oils, which helps give your hair the needed shine. Thought it might help prevent excess sebum production.

You Will Need
Virgin coconut oil(as per requirements)


What You Have To Do

  • You will take a bit of virgin oil and rub it between your palms
  • Then apply the oil everywhere to your scalp and hair
  • Leave it on for about hours before washing it off with light shampoo

Other Remedies to Consider

  • Epsom Salt
    Epsom salt is a rich source of magnesium which helps reduce scalp inflammation and absorb the excess sebum secreted by your scalp

1-2 teaspoons of Epsom salt

What You Have To Do


  • You will add a bit of Epsom salt to your shampoo and then shampoo your hair with it
  • Now you can let the Epsom salt-shampoo mixture work on your scalp and hair for few minutes before washing it off

Twice a week

  • Aloe Vera
    Aloe Vera is another way of treating oily and greasy hair, it shows significant astringent and nourishing properties due to its nutrient-rich composition. Thus, it may help control sebum secretion and make your hair very soft you will need:
    1-2 teaspoon of aloe vera gel
    1 tablespoon of lemon juice
    1 cup of water

What You Have To Do

  • First, add one to two teaspoons of aloe vera gel to a tablespoon of lemon juice
  • Then add a cup of water to this mixture and mix well
  • Now use this to rinse your hair, preferably after shampooing
  • The leave it on for few minutes and wash it off with cold water
